Iconoclasm 03:37
Storm, beeldenstorm, beeldenstorm. August 1566, the Iconoclastic fury. A catastrophic rage, ablaze from South to North. Beeldenstorm, beeldenstorm. Decadent Catholics, sober Calvinists. Led to persecutions. Wrecking the legacy, obtained during many centuries. Storm. Lost within a blink of an eye, in a violent rush destroyed. Cultural heritage assets, unique and Irreplaceable. Monuments of time, utterly defaced. They brake the altars, they wrested the irons. Carved work dashed into pieces. No respect for ancestral essence. With Alba’s dominance reprisal followed. Suppression, the only remedy. Provocation by all means as reality. Purification of the true belief. No difference in belief, only one true belief. Heresy to be wiped out. Decapitation of the rebellious nobles. As an example to intimidate the masses. Converted or to be killed.

Inquisition 03:07
The iconoclastic fury initiated the Eighty Years' War. Introducing the inquisition as a cruel and merciless tool. Banned were all preaching or practice of the reformed religion.Under the suspicion of heresy, thousands lost their life.Kettergericht, blasfemie! Subjected to the most gruesome tortures, before being burnt alive at the stake, or buried alive, alive. Kettergericht, van blasfemie beticht. No discrimination between the rich and the poor. The nobles and the plebs on the same level. Above all common forms of justice, execution at random will. Being judge and executioner, scrutinizing everyone. Failures caught as being an easy target. Without real evidence forced to confession. A one way court to unearthly absolution. Banished from life, life. Got rid of the apostates. Heretics Exiled, exterminated all!

Rage, full of rage. Furious, Philip of Spain became. The Dutch revolt left him no other choice. Council of trouble, infamous as the council of blood. Decisive intervention necessary. He choose the best commander fit for the job. He sent the iron duke on a mission. Respected by his troops, Alba led 10.000 marching feet. Capturing city after city with brutalities not ever been seen. To set matters straight the council of troubles got instituted. Local jurisdiction overruled. The council of trouble shocked the Dutch politicians. Within some years thousands were caught by this new tribunal. Sentenced to death or perpetual banishment. Grievously known as the council of blood. It didn’t hold back the Dutch revolt. It had no use, and resulted only in growing hatred. De bloedraad. Only decades later to be abolished. De bloedraad, verdomd en gewraakt.

The city under attack, siege of long breath. Starvation as a vile method to force capitulation. William the Silent knew what to expect. With plenty of stock within the walls they were well prepared. Nonetheless the siege endured long. Famine festered and took many brave lives. Still, the aggressors did not succeed. The besieged withstood them successfully. Siege mining access to breach the Dutch revolt failed. Tunnels collapsed due to too loose soil. A cold icy winter, demoralized men on both sides. One daring soul sneaked outside the walls. Dared to go on an adventure he found damping mash without mouths to be fed. Empty tents within an abandoned camp. The siege of long breath, a wasted campaign. Confronted by the aggressor’s absence the boy’s disbelief. Their patience being paid off. With no aggressors left, the remaining besieged survived. The mash and more were taken within the walls. October 1574, frozen limbs but much warmed souls. Surrounding cities captured and ruined. But not this city. A too long siege. Intruding allies, Sea Beggars’ invasion. Encouraged the aggressors departed. At the end, the besieged glorious and victorious. Leiden’s relieve, bold and perseverant achieved.

Sea Beggars 05:06
The sea Beggars, patriotic and powerful. They were of all classes within society. And exiled they all, they all became. Poor nobles, adventurers, idle seaman and criminals. A blend of privateers and pirates. With the years, more and more war vessels gathered. The formation of patriotic powerful military units. Under the command of daring and reckless leaders. The only effective tool William the Silent had. The sea Beggars, successful at sea, and opposing the Spanish oppressors. In England they found safe haven abroad. But by plundering all merchants ships they became drifters again. 1572, their first foothold on native land by the capture of Brielle. Vlissingen followed, and nearby towns dared to declare the revolt. The defeat of Spanish squadrons and relieve of Leiden’s siege. The ignition of general rebellion and resistance. Decisive in the revoke of the Spanish suppression. The Sea Beggars, recognized as the initiators of the Dutch independence.

Bankruptcy led to mutinies. Spanish mercenaries sacked Antwerp at the cost of numerous lives. Regardless religious believe, all Dutch provinces combined their strength against the Spanish forces. The pacification of Ghent. Regrettably but inevitable Calvinism and Catholicism did not blend. Despite William the Silent’ efforts the alliance did not hold. Nor could he prevent his own assassination. The 17 provinces got divided by religion. A fact which would turn out to be final till present time. The unions of Arras and Utrecht were formed. Southern Catholics returned loyal under Spanish command. Northern Calvinist declared themselves independent. By acknowledgement of several European powers, this independence was a first step to what would become the Dutch republic. A first non-monarchic country in Europe. Divine power of kings. No longer only the divine power of Kings. Once again religion caused dissension. Religion succeed where Spanish forces failed. Resulting in separate unions. Different concerns and benefits. Northern Amsterdam flourished. Southern Antwerp’s decay.

The Eighty Years war. A key event in Dutch history. Also known as the Dutch War of Independence. Sick and tired of the everlasting war in 1648 the Peace of Münster was signed. The formal recognition of the independent Dutch republic. And at least important, the religious freedom of speech. No longer under Spanish fury and rage. The Northern seven provinces went prosperous into the golden age. Colonization and improving trade, a world’s dominating, leading power. The hunger for expansion had also a dark side. By taking over Portuguese routes, all, and also less humane benefits were taken. Unfortunate entangled and brought under slavery. With no human rights used as the tools of the trade. A part of the rat race between the western European powers. The Dutch, prosperous through the golden age. Michiel de Ruyter’s victories at sea. The French and English fleet, smashed into smithereens. Prosperous through the golden age. In England, the Glorious Revolution. Dutch William the 3rd on the throne!
